privacy policy
last updated September 30, 2026
the short version
- we collect what the app needs to work: your account, what you post, and your location while you walk or make a route.
- we don’t sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites. there are no analytics in the app.
- you choose who sees your walks: make your profile private, or any single walk private.
- you can delete your account from settings at any time.
- questions: hello@caniwalkwithyou.com
who we are
can i walk with you? is an iPhone app for walking routes that other people leave, and leaving routes of your own. “we”, “us” and “the app” in this policy mean Thoraya Maronesy, who makes the app. you can reach us at hello@caniwalkwithyou.com.
what we collect, and why
your account
- your email address, so you can sign in, reset a forgotten password and change your email. if you sign in with Apple, we get the email Apple gives us (which can be a private relay address) and never your Apple password.
- your password is handled by our database provider (Supabase) and stored scrambled (hashed). we never see it.
- your handle (like @walker), and if you add them: a display name, bio, profile photo and Instagram username. these are shown on your profile.
your location
- while a walk is going, and while you record a route you’re making, the app follows your location to guide you, check off stops as you reach them, and draw the line you walked. if you allow “always”, this keeps working while the screen is off - only while that walk or recording is going. your iPhone shows the blue location indicator whenever this happens.
- what’s saved: the line you walked is saved with your finished walk. the line, start and stops of a route you make are saved with the route. a walk in progress or a draft is saved to your account so it isn’t lost.
- at other times, a few screens (“near me”, search, notifications and tag pages) take one reading of where you are, to sort routes by distance. that reading isn’t saved.
- the app never tracks you in the background when no walk or recording is going.
what you make and share
- routes: the title, description, tags, stops (their names, places, notes, prompts, opening hours), photos, videos, drawings and the route’s line.
- walks: the stops you reached or skipped, what you left at each stop (notes, photos, videos, drawings), how it felt, your rating, who you walked with (if you add them), when you walked, how long, and your step count.
- photos and videos you take or choose, including the sound in videos you record.
- drafts of walks and routes you “save for later”. these are yours alone.
- social activity: who you follow and who follows you, follow requests, likes, comments, reposts, saved routes, posts you remove from the feed, people you block, and the people you recently searched for.
steps
while you walk, the app reads your iPhone’s step counter (motion & fitness) to count your steps. only the total for each walk is saved.
notifications
if you turn notifications on, we keep your iPhone’s notification token and your notification choices, so we can tell you when someone follows you, likes or comments on your walk, mentions you, or walks a route you made.
walk club and “notify me”
- if you say yes to the walk club, we add your account’s email to the walk club list, to tell you about group walks near you and app news now and then.
- if you ask to be told when walking with strangers opens (“notify me”), we keep the email you type in.
- every one of these emails has a one-tap unsubscribe link at the bottom. you can also turn walk club emails off in settings.
- to have a “notify me” email removed, email hello@caniwalkwithyou.com and we’ll delete it.
reports
if you report something, we keep what you reported, why, any note you add, and a copy of what it said at the time, so it can be reviewed. the report is emailed to us, and we review reports within 24 hours. if 3 different people report the same thing, it’s hidden from everyone but the person who posted it until we’ve reviewed it. the person you reported is never told who reported them.
to keep the app safe
to stop people guessing passwords or overloading the app, the server keeps a count of recent requests from each internet (IP) address. these counts aren’t linked to your account, and each one is deleted automatically after 30 days.
what other people can see
- your profile (handle, display name, bio, photo, Instagram username) can be seen by anyone, including people without an account - even when your profile is private. people you’ve blocked can’t see it.
- public profile: your published routes and your walks can be seen by anyone, including people who aren’t signed in.
- private profile: only people you approve as followers can see your routes and walks.
- a private walk is seen only by you, whatever your profile is.
- a private stop on a walk: what you left there stays yours alone.
- what others see of a walk: what you left at the stops, how it felt, your rating, who you walked with, when you walked, how long and your step count, and the line you walked.
- routes show their line, stops, notes and photos. prompts stay hidden until someone walks the route.
- your likes, comments and reposts can be seen by anyone who can see the post.
- blocking someone hides you from each other completely, and removes their comments, likes and reposts from your walks and routes.
- drafts, walks in progress, your notification settings, who you’ve blocked, your searches and your reports are never shown to anyone else.
who helps us run the app
we use a few services to run the app. each gets only what it needs.
- Supabase stores the app’s data, photos and videos, and handles sign-in. our data is kept in the United States (US West).
- Resend sends the app’s emails (sign-in and password codes, and reports to us).
- Apple:
- Sign in with Apple
- notifications
- maps and walking directions
- place search when you make a route (your search words and where you are, to find places near you)
- turning a location into a place or city name
- OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and Overpass) helps find places near a stop, a place’s opening hours, and whether a spot looks like a home address. these requests include a location, never your name or account.
- this website is hosted on GitHub Pages. it has no cookies, analytics or tracking.
we don’t use any analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services.
what we don’t do
- we don’t sell your personal information, or share it for advertising.
- we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- we don’t show ads.
your choices
- private profile: your profile → edit profile → private profile.
- private walk: choose “who can see this walk?” when you finish a walk, or later with “edit my walk”.
- private stops: mark what you leave at a stop as private.
- location: you can say no, or choose “while using” instead of “always”, in the iPhone’s settings. walking and making routes need location to work.
- notifications: turn them off, or choose which ones you get, in settings.
- walk club and “notify me” emails: tap the unsubscribe link in any of them, or turn walk club emails off in settings.
- block and report: tap “⋯” on a post, a walk, a profile, a route or a comment.
deleting your account
go to your profile → settings (the gear) → delete account, then tap “continue” and type “delete”. you can also do it from edit profile.
what’s deleted, straight away:
- your account, profile and profile photo
- your routes (for everyone)
- your walks
- your photos, videos and drawings
- your drafts and any walk in progress
- your likes, comments and reposts, and other people’s likes, comments and reposts on your walks and routes
- who you follow and who follows you, your blocks, saved routes and searches
- your notification token and settings
- your walk club answer and your place on the email lists
if you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to disconnect the app from your Apple ID.
what’s kept:
- other people’s walks of your routes. they’re theirs. each keeps its own copy of the route’s name and place.
- reports, both the ones you made and the ones about you, with a copy of what was reported, so we can still deal with them.
- your handle, held for 30 days so nobody else can take it straight away. after that it’s free again.
- a record that each route and walk was deleted, so it can never come back from an old phone.
- an email you typed into “notify me” while signed out isn’t linked to your account. ask us and we’ll remove it.
our database provider keeps short-term backups for recovery. deleted data can remain in those backups until they expire.
how long we keep things
we keep your information while your account exists, and delete it when you delete your account (see above). notifications that have been sent are cleared after 7 days. the counts of requests from each internet address are deleted after 30 days.
children
can i walk with you? isn’t made for children. you must be at least 13 to use it. we don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. if you think a child has given us information, email hello@caniwalkwithyou.com and we’ll delete it.
security
your connection to the app is encrypted. your data is protected by access rules in the database, so people can only see what you’ve allowed. photos in private places are only shared through links that expire. no system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
changes to this policy
if we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app before the change takes effect. the date at the top shows when it last changed.
